Without a doubt, Niagara Falls is one of the most magical places in the world. There’s something that brings awe to the spectator as the qualified water rush’s over to pound the rocks below. During the summer months, hundreds of thousands of population flock to see them and experience what Niagara has to offer. As a result, hotels and attractions spend millions to advertise their venues in order to attract a small fraction of the tourists so they can get their piece of the pie. As you already know, advertising can be deceiving, and will all the time try to put on its best face. So, before you book that “great deal” let’s look a puny deeper.

I all the time snicker when I drive by the large billboard sign near Fallsview Boulevard that displays an up close 20 foot Great White Shark in advertisement for the Rain Forest Cafe’s shark display in their gift shop. Does it work? Yes, population flock to the well known cafe, but not for its food, rather so the kids can see the shark display. Guess what? The sharks all died off, and I believe at the time of this writing there may be 2 left and they about the size of a large carp (maybe 2 feet tops). Hardly as intelligent as one may have hoped, even if the kids still like it. Now, don’t get me wrong. The Rain Forest Cafe on Clifton Hill is a astounding place to eat, especially if you’re bringing the kids. What I am saying is the avenue they’ve chosen to direct traffic there is a puny deceiving. As are many other attractions, accommodations, and restaurants, so be informed before you take the plunge.

Rain Forest

Another thing you should be aware of is independent owners. With the quick rise of tourism over the years many local company men purchased older inns, motels, and other structure to convert into accommodations hoping to get into the action. Now while you can save a mountainous whole of money on these types of inns, there is a good opening you could find yourself in a crap shack. There are deals to be found, but beware there are owners who just don’t care about their accommodations and figure penny tongs will continue to roll in through the years anyway.

A fallsview hotel does not necessarily mean a fallsview room. Despite the fallsview photos implanted in their bedroom photos, they sell out city view rooms with allowance prices so be sure you are getting what you want. Don’t be naive and try to see advertising for what it is. A sales pitch to get you to buy no matter what the cost.

5 Things to do to protect yourself:

1. Do your study – rule where you want to stay by what you want to see and do. Don’t let price of accommodations rule that for you. Then get as much exact information about the accommodations, locations, amenities, attractions and services as you possibly can via internet, and phone.

2. Reviews – Check online reviews for your key area of interest. What are population saying about your choice, the pros and cons, the benefits and downsides?

3. Ask someone who’s been there – If you have friends or family that have gone to Niagara Falls, ask them where they stayed and the good, the bad and the ugly of their situation. Then follow up with more research.

4. YouTube – population love to post their experiences up on YouTube. Check to see if your interests are posted and you can have a taste of what you’ll experience beforehand.

5. Google Images – Most search engines offer an images directory, where you can search for images pertaining to your area of interest. Check to see if where you’re staying is comparable to the advertising photos.

Mike my brother, hot muggy,

jungle all around him, lost in its sea of green,

Jungle

my helicopter softly roaring

my helicopter softly roaring

my helicopter softly roaring

over the top of the mass of green-

(they just saved person from the jungle a day ago-)

told my Commanding Officer, an Army Captain,

we had to dispose this helicopter to drop me off

in his last known locality-:

in this sea of green, this jungle

in this sea of green, this jungle

in this sea of green, this jungle:

below me, with its suburb colors of foliage

with so many shades of green

below me, in this sea of green,

with no alleyways, stop lights

just bugs, green and weeds.

Mike I thought:

where can you be,

where is he,

where can he be…

deep in this sea of green,

deep in this sea of green-below me:

the ground below me, spots of brown

brown spots, eh, where can he be?

in this sea of green, this jungle,

in this sea of green, this jungle,

below me; I notice-in this early morn,

a spicy sunrise beyond the copter’s eye,

way beyond its eye, way, way

beyond its eye…

rotary petition above my head

like a watchtower jumping, rocking

“Jump” a voice says,

“we’ll pick you up later.”

Thru the blue ski I fall,

through the blue sky I fall, fall, fall,

fall, and fall to the hot planet below,

I approximately feel like an angel falling to earth,

falling to this sea of green, this jungle.

I fall, and fall, to the hot planet below,

then hit land, insects hop back and forth;

hit land, insects working hard,

with heavy green loads on their back,

with heavy green loads (I see a toad

in the foliage-hiding big as my head,

in the sea of green, this jungle;

between my feet, fingers, and boots, the

ants march, march with their loads

like trained minuscule soldiers.

I have a horn type loudspeaker

and some other equipment, food;

it’ll have to do, last a few days.

I tell myself, ‘Staff Sergeant,’ get up,

the helicopter will be back in a day,

available, to saving me.

I quest the terrain,

I searched the terrain,

this sea of green, this hot, muggy jungle,

with heavy green toads, and ants with big loads:

thought, thinking, had a thought,

he might be in… Then it all of a sudden,

my thoughts, thinking, stopped,

there over there,

there, right over there,

over there, over there,

I see him resting from the heat

under a large tree, in this sea of green,

in this green sea, this jungle:

bushes on both sides of him,

he’s eating something.

Notes: About the Poem “Helicopter over the Jungle”: Here is a new poem from a dream, many lines repeated, to combine the motif tone, and first thoughts to yield the sensitivity and texture (or grain I want) for the poem-dream. I do not claim this to be a” First thought, best thought,” poem, that was not the idea behind this poem, or even spontaneous insight, was considered, not sure if there is any insight, other than a psychological message for me, and if so it is most likely my fear of my brother being in some kind of mental turmoil (and this in itself is a good premise for the reader to look at, for dreams are often made up of fears, desires and wishes, and messages from the Lord, and some nightmares, come directly from His Adversary). What you get in this poem really, or so I think, is a sequence of thoughts not particularly in any solid form, it is more of a natural form, mindfully set of course.

Spreading far and wide over the soils of Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana and Suriname, sheltering an area of 5,500,000 km² (2,123,562 sq mi) is the world’s largest tropical rain forest with many species of wildlife and some of them are undiscovered up to date. It was even listed to be voted in the new seven wonder of Nature in 2009. Not only as a rainforest untouched but because of its distinction in flora and fauna plus the climate and its vastness, it beholds a very leading place among most beautiful places found on Earth. Not to forget though this is a living laboratory, a rich withhold of Carbon and a store house of Oxygen and it’s our top priority to protect it.

It is believed that the name Amazon is said to arise from a war Francisco de Orellana fought with a tribe of Tapuyas and other tribes from South America. The women of the tribe fought alongside the men, as was the institution among the entire tribe. Orellana derived the name Amazonas from the aged Amazons of Asia and Africa described by Herodotus and Diodorus in Greek legends.

Rain Forest

Rainforest must have been formed while the Eocene. It must have formed following a global discount of tropical temperatures when Atlantic Ocean wide sufficiently to furnish warm and moist climate to the Amazon basin. Since its formation it must have been existed the way it is for about 55 million years mostly free of Savannah type biomes. When the climate became drier the Savannah spread widely.

The extinction of the dinosaurs and the wetter climate may have allowed the tropical rainforest to spread out across the continent. From 65-34 Mya, the rainforest extended as far south as 45°. climate fluctuations while the last 34 million years have allowed savanna regions to develop into the tropics. while the Oligocene, for example, the rainforest spanned a relatively narrow band that lay mostly above latitude 15°N. It wide again while the Middle Miocene, then retracted to a mostly inland formation at the last glacial maximum. However, the rainforest still managed to thrive while these glacial periods, allowing for the survival and evolution of a broad diversity of species.

During the mid-Eocene, it is believed that the drainage basin of the Amazon was split along the middle of the continent by the Purus Arch. Water on the eastern side flowed toward the Atlantic, while to the west water flowed toward the Pacific across the Amazonas Basin. As the Andes Mountains rose, however, a large basin was created that enclosed a lake; now known as the Solimões Basin. Within the last 5-10 million years, this accumulating water broke through the Purus Arch, joining the easterly flow toward the Atlantic.

There is evidence that there have been essential changes in Amazon rainforest vegetation over the last 21,000 years through the Last Glacial Maximum (Lgm) and subsequent deglaciation. Analyses of sediment deposits from Amazon basin paleolakes and from the Amazon Fan indicate that rainfall in the basin while the Lgm was lower than for the present, and this was approximately really linked with reduced moist tropical vegetation cover in the basin. There is doubt, however, over how overall this discount was. Some scientists argue that the rainforest was reduced to small, isolated refugia separated by open forest and grassland and other scientists argue that the rainforest remained largely intact but extended less far to the north, south, and east than is seen today. This has proved difficult to determine because the practical limitations of working in the rainforest mean that data sampling is biased away from the town of the Amazon basin, and both explanations are reasonably well supported by the ready data.

Based on archaeological evidence from an excavation at Caverna da Pedra Pintada, human inhabitants first placed in the Amazon region at least 11,200 years ago. Subsequent amelioration led to late-prehistoric settlements along the periphery of the forest by 1250 Ad, which induced alterations in the forest cover. Biologists believe that a population density of 0.2 inhabitants per quadrilateral kilometre (0.52 /sq mi) is the maximum that can be sustained in the rain forest through hunting. Hence, agriculture is needed to host a larger population.

Some 5 to 7 million population lived in the Amazon region, divided in the middle of dense coastal settlements, such as that at Marajó, and inland dwellers. For a long time, it was believed that those inland dwellers were sparsely populated hunter-gatherer tribes. Archeologist Betty J. Meggers was a leading proponent of this idea, as described in her book Amazonia: Man and Culture in a Counterfeit Paradise. However, modern archeological findings have recommend that the region was really densely populated.

One of the main pieces of evidence is the existence of the fertile Terra preta (black earth), which is distributed over large areas in the Amazon forest. It is now widely accepted that these soils are a product of indigenous soil management. The amelioration of this soil allowed agriculture and silviculture in the previously hostile environment; meaning that large portions of the Amazon rainforest are probably the effect of centuries of human management, rather than plainly occurring as has previously been supposed. In the region of the Xinguanos tribe, remains of some of these large settlements in the middle of the Amazon forest were found in 2003 by Michael Heckenberger and colleagues of the University of Florida. Among those were evidence of roads, bridges and large plazas.

As we all know, Amazon forest is amazingly rich in flora and fauna. Discussing through its wildlife one may find many varieties of native and indigenous species of frogs eg: Giant leaf frog, birds like Scarlet Macaw, and as many as 2.5 million of insect species. It is home for 40 000 plant species, 3000 fish, 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles. Scientists have described in the middle of 96,660 and 128,843 invertebrate species in Brazil alone.

One quadrilateral kilometer (247 acres) of Amazon rainforest can include about 90,790 metric tonnes of living plants. The average plant biomass is estimated at 356 ± 47 tonnes ha−1. To date, an estimated 438,000 species of plants of economic and group interest have been registered in the region with many more remaining to be discovered or catalogued. The green leaf area of plants and trees in the rainforest varies by about 25% as a effect of seasonal changes. Leaves develop while the dry season when sunlight is at a maximum, then undergo abscission in the cloudy wet season. These changes furnish a equilibrium of carbon in the middle of photosynthesis and respiration. Among the largest predatory creatures are the Black Caiman, jaguar, cougar, and anaconda. In the river, galvanic eels can yield an galvanic shock that can stun or kill, while piranha are known to bite and injure humans. Discrete species of poison dart frogs secrete lipophilic alkaloid toxins through their flesh. There are also numerous parasites and disease vectors. Vampire bats dwell in the rainforest and can spread the rabies virus. Malaria, Yellow fever and Dengue fever can also be contracted in the Amazon region.

Farmers near Amazon forest used to cultivate crops by manipulating the forest area. As the nutrient content in the forest soil is surprisingly low (this is because Amazon forest is a extremely active eco principles and its gross former productivity is high) farmers keep absorbing deforesting the area for cultivation. in the middle of 1991 and 2000, the total area of forest lost in the Amazon rose from 415,000 to 587,000 quadrilateral kilometers (160,000 to 227,000 sq mi), with most of the lost forest becoming pasture for cattle. 70% of formerly forested land in the Amazon, and 91% of land deforested since 1970, is used for livestock pasture. In addition, Brazil is currently the second-largest global producer of soybeans after the United States. The needs of soy farmers have been used to validate many of the controversial transportation projects that are currently developing in the Amazon. The first two highways successfully opened up the rain forest and led to increased community and deforestation. The mean every year deforestation rate from 2000 to 2005 (22,392 km2 [8,646 sq mi] per year) was 18% higher than in the old five years (19,018 km2 [7,343 sq mi] per year). Deforestation has declined significantly in the Brazilian Amazon since 2004.

As a effect of deforestation, environmentalists fear the loss in bio diversity as well as the publish of the Carbon which could at last increase global warming. Amazonian evergreen forests catalogue for about 10% of the world’s terrestrial former productivity and 10% of the carbon market in ecosystems of the order of 1.1 × 1011 metric tonnes of carbon. Amazonian forests are estimated to have accumulated 0.62 ± 0.37 tons of carbon per hectare per year in the middle of 1975 and 1996. Some fear that due to emission of green house gases, the forest will be unsustainable and will be lost totally by year 2100 at this rate.

From 2002 to 2006, the conserved land in the Amazon rainforest has approximately tripled and deforestation rates have dropped up to 60%. About 1,000,000 quadrilateral kilometres (250,000,000 acres) have been put onto some sort of conservation, which adds up to a current estimate of 1,730,000 quadrilateral kilometres (430,000,000 acres).

The basin is drained by the Amazon River, the world’s largest river in terms of discharge, and the second longest river in the world after the Nile. The river is made up of over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are longer than 1000 miles, and two of which (the Negro and the Madeira) are larger, in terms of volume, than the Congo (formerly the Zaire) river. The river principles is the lifeline of the forest and its history plays an leading part in the amelioration of its rainforests. It spans the borders of eight countries and one overseas territory, is the world’s largest river basin and the source of one-fifth of all free-flowing fresh water on Earth. Its rain forests are the planet’s largest and most luxuriant, and home to – amazingly – one in ten known species on Earth.

More than 350 indigenous and ethnic groups have lived in the Amazon for thousands of years, tapping nature for agriculture, clothing and former medicines. Today, more than 30 million population live in the region. Although most live in large urban centers, all residents remain dependent on the Amazon’s ecosystem services for food, security and livelihoods. For the indigenous population the Amazon rainforest is leading because it is their home and their culture is closely linked to the forest, rivers and fauna. If you destroy the forest you also destroy all the indigenous population that are left. Some of the tribes in the Amazon still have not had contact with outside cultures yet. Can we destroy the indigenous way of life? The population have been happily living for thousands of years. Humanity will lose their language, art, tales, and also their knowledge.

Destruction of the forest had led to many dangerous conditions not only affecting the forest but every inch on the planet. We reconsider mum earth as one whole unit that constantly working and building and every living species has an ecological niche in its eco system. As the world’s largest rain forest that absorbs most of the Co2 that is released to the climate and a major catchment area as well as a water recycler, Amazon is our responsibility. Protecting it, preserving it and using it sustainably will prosper every living matter on earth including mankind. Its uniqueness that amazes the whole world will be otherwise lost for good. Scientists and botanists and Discrete types of professionals that enter this great green cover explore something new daily and just dream that most of the pills and medication we use are from Amazon. It is a withhold of medicinal herbs and truly it is a gift of god. Visit it, admire its attractiveness and join hands in raising awareness in saving it for the future world.
